Methodist: Residency Experience
Methodist Hospital is a busy 700-bed facility located less than one mile from the IU Medical Center. The two campuses are connected by a modern monorail transportation system. A new hospital structure was completed in 1994 and is well equipped with contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic capability. Surgery residents rotate on several general surgery services, a trauma service and specialty surgical services. The general and trauma surgery services are staffed by 15 board certified members of the volunteer clinical surgery faculty. One Chief Resident covers the three “Green” services, one Chief Resident the two “Silver” services and one Chief Resident covers the Trauma Service. There are rotations in Cardiothoracic, General Vascular and Adult Critical Care. A new Clarian Cardiovascular Institute was opened in 2001. Cardiovascular and General Vascular Surgical services formerly at University Hospital were moved to Methodist Hospital in this new facility and are supervised by IU Surgical faculty.
Surgery residents participate in all phases of patient care. Patients are seen pre- and post-operatively in clinics supervised by teaching staff and chief residents. Residents perform primary assessment prior to operation and/or hospitalization, conduct daily rounds independently and with the teaching staff, and assume progressive operative responsibility supervised by the teaching faculty. The facility has thirty-three operating rooms. More then 30,000 cases are performed here annually. Methodist Hospital has a busy emergency service and is an ACS verified Level 1 Trauma Center with a busy emergency room that sees 94,000 patients per year with 3,000 trauma patients admitted annually (1,500 on the trauma service). Helicopter transport is frequently used to transport trauma patients to this facility.
The offices for teaching faculty at Methodist Hospital are located within the hospital allowing residents assigned to specific faculty access to pre- and post-operative follow-up care. More than 20,000 patients are seen in these facilities annually. There is an ambulatory surgical facility based at Methodist Hospital .
