Wishard: Residency Experience
The Wishard Memorial Hospital is a 300-bed facility that is the public hospital for Indianapolis and Marion County. General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Peripheral Vascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Trauma and Surgical Critical Care are provided on three surgical services.
Team I cares for patients with general surgical, and pediatric surgical problems. Team II cares primarily for general surgical problems and breast care; Team III manages patients with injuries, and Team IV cares for patients with vascular disease. Each service is staffed by a senior general surgical resident, a junior general surgical resident and surgical interns. Faculty supervision for general surgery is provided by Drs. Canal, Jacobson, Simons, Gomez, Streib, Hayward and Zyromski. General Vascular Surgery supervision is provided by Drs. Shafique and Murphy. Trauma and Surgical Critical Care coverage is provided by Drs. Gomez, Jacobson, Simons, Streib, Falimirski, and Hayward . Pediatric Surgery care and supervision is delivered by the Children's Surgical Faculty (Drs.West, Rescorla, Scherer, Engum, Billmire, Ladd and Rouse) and postgraduate residents in Pediatric Surgery working with the General Surgery residents. Dr. Rieger supervises non-cardiac thoracic surgery and thoracic trauma cases. There are approximately 1,800 admissions to the surgical services each year, and 1,400 operations are performed annually. There are eight beds in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and an additional 29 beds in the Progressive Intensive Care Unit, which are covered by the Surgical Critical Care Team.
The Emergency Room of the Wishard Memorial Hospital is the largest such facility in Indiana , caring for approximately 110,000 patients annually. This facility serves as the receiving and triage area for the Trauma Center as well as the surgical services. The institution was verified as a Level-I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and contains the State's only verified Adult Burn Center . A new burn center opened in May, 2003.
Outpatient facilities are located in the Regenstrief Institute, a modern ambulatory care facility adjacent to the hospital. The Surgery Clinic houses a waiting area, examining rooms, and treatment areas where minor surgical procedures can be performed. Approximately 6,000 patients are seen in the various surgical clinics annually by the residents supervised by the faculty.
