Education and Residency: Training
The General Surgery program, sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine, is five years in length and stresses all aspects of diagnostic work-up, preoperative preparation, intraoperative judgment, surgical technique, postoperative management and follow-up care. In addition to the clinical experience, most residents choose the option of spending one or more years dedicated to research. The wide variety of clinical problems present at this multi-hospital complex allows each individual an ample opportunity to observe and experience firsthand the complexities of the response of the surgical patient to disease, trauma, and operative intervention.
The Department of Surgery offers 23 first-year positions as surgical house officers through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Nine of the first-year positions are categorical general surgery positions, while 14 are preliminary positions for designated house officers interested in a subsequent career in other surgical subspecialties: Urology, Otolaryngology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Anesthesia and Ophthalmology. The postgraduate surgical curriculum closely follows the guidelines and requirements recommended by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
