Residency: Second Year
In the second year (PGY-2), subspecialty exposure is broadened to include rotations in which experience was not obtained in the first year. On the General Surgery services, the operating experience extends significantly and involves minimally invasive procedures, more complicated hernia repairs, some trauma and less complicated gastrointestinal and biliary procedures. An increasing amount of clinical independence also is achieved based on the core competencies and objectives established for this level of training.
At the completion of the second year, the house officer should have had the opportunity to rotate on all the specialty services. The directors of the surgical specialty training programs (e.g., Cardiovascular, Plastic, Neurosurgery and Pediatric Surgery) often have given preference to the trainees in General Surgery at Indiana University who have applied for subspecialty postgraduate training.
