Microsurgery Training Program
Purpose
To teach the skills required to perform microvascular, microneural, and microtubular surgeries required in a variety of surgical specialties including Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Cardiothoracic Surgery. More advanced training is available and is tailored to the individual's special needs and interest.
Course Descriptions
Basic Microsurgical Course (40 hours)
This course focuses on training students to acquire a higher level of basic skills in microvascular surgery by means of intense laboratory practice. This forty hour course involves six sessions which cover the following topics:
- Session 1: Basic Microsurgical Techniques
- Session 2: Arterial End-to-End Anastomoses
- Session 3: Femoral Venous End-to-End Anastomoses
- Session 4: Interpositional Vein Graft Placement
- Session 5: Sciatic nerve repair
- Session 6: End-to-Side Anastomoses, along with additional advanced microsurgical methods
A certificate of Completion is issued by the Division of Plastic Surgery, Indiana University School of Medicine.
40 Category I CME credit hours as approved by the American Medical Association will be awarded to practicing physicians
Advanced Microsurgical Course (12 hours)
This course is designed for training senior residents and surgeons to acquire advanced skills in microvascular replantation and free tissue transfer focusing on clinical applications. This twelve hour course involves two sessions which cover the following topics:
Session
1: Complete replantation of the rabbit's two ears. The practicum consists
of a series of exercise, including:
- Complete amputation of ear.
- dissection of amputated stumps
- Identifying and marking vessel ends
- Fixation of the cartilage ends
- Anastomoses of artery and vein
- Anastomosis of the nerve
Session 2: Free flap transfer. The inguinal flaps of both the rabbit and rat are utilized. This involves dissecting the flap and vascular pedicle, resituating the flap in the contralateral inguinal region or in the neck, revascularizing the flap by arterial and venous anastomosis.
A Certificate of Completion is issued by the Division of Plastic Surgery, Indiana University School of Medicine.
12 Category I CME credit hours as approved by the American Medical Association will be awarded to practicing physicians.

This includes all supplies and instructional materials. Courses begin each Monday and run through Friday. Course hours are 8:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.

Please send email with the preferred dates to jge@iupui.edu and reserve a position in training courses at least 45 days prior to the initiation of the course. The registration fee for the Basic Microsurgical Course is $300.00 and is refundable.
